Biobased latexes from natural oil derivatives

Vinyl aromatic monomers derived from dihydroeugenol (EBM) and guaiacol (GBM) were copolymerized, via a miniemulsion process, with aliphatic high oleic soybean oil (HOSBM), yielding emulsion polymers higher levels of biobased content. This fully renewable monomer feed generated broad range novel latexes, the number-average molecular weight varying 25,000–650,000 g/mol. Increasing content heightened resulting latexes’ weights due to decreasing unsaturation degree (lower HOSBM content) in reactive mixture. The effect was found be more pronounced for latexes EBMs HOSBMs because are free radical polymerization compared GBMs. presence oil-derived unsaturated fragments provides an opportunity crosslink controlled way adjust polymer networks’ thermomechanical properties. Thus, crosslinked films coatings made 25–90 wt.% EBM/GBM 10–75 tested. demonstrated that characteristics latex materials determined by nature ratio residues macromolecular backbone. Young’s modulus also greater EBM/GBM, while flexibility polymeric soft copolymer For all films, hardness, impact resistance adhesion steel substrate evaluated.
